8) THE RECOMMENDED DIABETES DIET

b) Moderation Food Pyramid

If we are still using pyramids, the Moderation Type 2 Diabetes Diet food pyramid recommended here-in to treat Type 2 Diabetes is a lot different than many others (in any "pyramid" it is recommended to eat the least of what is at the top of the pyramid and the most from what is at the bottom of the pyramid):

Lean Red Meat

Low Glycemic Index Fruit

Nuts......................................Seeds

High Fiber Cereals............................ Beans

Fish.............. White Meat Chicken.............. Skim Milk

Multicolored Vegetables especially Spinach, Kale and Collards

This pyramid is what the latest statistically meaningful multi-center research has shown is best for those individuals with type 2 diabetes. Note that refined carbohydrates, sweets and fat are not on this pyramid at all.

The National Diabetes Education Program of the National Institutes of Health recommends a quite different Pyramid:

Fats and Sweets

Meat and Dairy products

Vegetables .............and ............fruit

Starches: grains, beans and starchy vegetables

We feel a diet like this will raise triglycerides ("grains" include "refined carbohydrate") and raise protein poisoning. We find it less than ideal for anyone with type 2 diabetes. But if it works to reduce weight and keep the weight off it is much better than doing nothing.
