8) THE RECOMMENDED DIABETES DIET

c) Foods to Avoid on the Moderation Diet

This is a list we quite honestly wished we didn't have to make. People just don't like to be told what not to eat, they tend to go ahead and eat the items out of spite. So these are foods we don't recommend, but go ahead and eat them if you don't mind feeling bad. People with type 2 diabetes who eat these particular foods will have headaches, upset stomachs, and just generally not feel well. They will feel low on energy, drained and depressed. Their pancreas and liver just can't handle these foods very well and they won't feel good if they eat them.

1) Generally both high glycemic index and fat:
99% of all prepared snack foods, donuts, cakes, cookies, pies, potato chips, banana chips (actually they are fried, not dried), fried foods, ice cream, coffee creamer, Dairy Whip, pizza, 90% of all fast foods (Wendi's chili and grilled chicken salads, McDonalds grilled chicken salads are notable exceptions). If you like fast food at McDonalds, you have to watch the video of the documentary movie "Super-size Me", it's very revealing. The author ate only McDonalds food for one month and had serious health difficulties after only three weeks, with a Doctor telling him to stop! The French fries seem to be the main culprit.

2) High glycemic index or high fructose:
baked or mashed potatoes, white rice, most white or dark breads, taco shells, tortilla wraps, pita bread, cornbread, pancakes, grits, popcorn, pumpkin, winter squash, flat beans (fava beans), corn starch, starch, modified food starch, sugar (sucrose), dextrose, maltodextrin, candy, chocolate (both light and dark), honey, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, tapioca, papaya, watermelon, honeydew melons, cantaloupe, dates, fat free sugar free puddings (all starch), polydextrose, fructose, pineapple, grapes, oranges, raisins, catsup, dried fruit, beets, sugar free candy (it is NOT sugar free), low fat yogurt and regular yogurt (second ingredient on label of most yogurts is high fructose corn syrup)

3) High in poisoned (glycated) proteins:
meatloaf, wieners, franks, bacon, chicken skins, hamburgers

4) High in saturated fat:
full fat cheeses, full fat yogurt, butter, margarine, coconut, cream, whipped cream, ice cream, whole eggs

5) High Salt Foods:
Cheeses (except low fat mozzarella), olives, pickles,

6) The Forbidden Sugary Drinks and Fruit Juices:
One of the worst foods for any person is "high fructose corn syrup" sweetened drinks such as Regular Coke, Regular Pepsi or other "sodas". "Natural" fruit juices (orange juice, apple juice, grape juice, etc.) have the same high fructose levels and should not be ingested.

7) Sugar alcohols:
One of the biggest rip-offs to come along is the use of sugar alcohols to replace sugar. Sugar alcohols include: sorbitol, mannitol, isomalt, maltitol, xylitol, lactitol, and hydrogenated starch hydrolysate (HSH). These are just as much carbohydrates as regular sugars, the manufacturers just convinced the government to list them as artificial sweeteners with no nutritional value. These ingredients are low glycemic index carbohydrates with 30% to 50% of the calories per gram of sugar, but they are typically not as sweet as sugar so more of the sugar alcohols have to be added to get the same effect. "Sugarless" candy, cookies and ice cream made with these materials should be avoided.
